5 Unique New Year's Resolutions for 2017

It's finally 2017, and with a new year comes new resolutions. Instead of making the generic resolutions to lose weight and get in shape, why not commit to something new this year? While those are good goals if you need to get healthier, don't forget about improving your mental health as well. Here are five unique New Year's resolutions for 2017.

Do Something That Scares You

There is such a fear of the unknown that people often don't go after the goals they really want. Have you always wanted to go on a trip to Greece, but your friends are busy and you've never traveled alone? Go by yourself! You'll have so much fun exploring the beautiful country that you'll be glad you did it. You might even make new friends while you're there.

Have you been wanting to start your own business, but assume it will fail? You never know until you try! Come up with actionable plans on what steps you need to do first to get started in the right direction. Every successful company started somewhere, right?

Call a Friend Once a Week

It may seem like such a simple task, but we often get so wrapped up in our lives that we forget to socialize. Instead of saying you'll do it next week, schedule a weekly appointment in your calendar just like a doctor's appointment. That way you'll remind yourself how important it is and not push it aside. If you can meet them in person for dinner or coffee, all the better.

Maintaining friendships are so important for our mental health. Laughter is medicine, so recounting old stories of your crazy times in college will make you happy. It's also important to vent, whether it's about serious issues in life or about your three-year-old not listening for the 10th time.

Take Time for Yourself Each Day

Take time each day to have time to yourself. You're so busy taking care of others at work or running around picking up your kids and cooking for your family that you might feel you have no time left. Don't forget that you're important, too.

Set aside at least 10 minutes for yourself, whether it's the first thing in the morning or at night. Read your favorite book or practice yoga. You can even sit there in silence doing nothing if you want. Just make sure it's an activity you enjoy.

Try a New Food Every Month

We tend to get stuck in our ruts of ordering the same thing when we go out for dinner. It's comfortable because we know we like it. Expand your taste buds and order a new dish at your favorite restaurant at least once a month. If you end up not liking it, that's fine, but at least you tried something else.

Even better, try a new type of cuisine you've never had before. Head to that Lebanese restaurant you pass by every day for dinner next time you go out. You might be amazed at how good the food is with the spices used. It might even give you some ideas for cooking at home!

Find an Organization to Volunteer At

We sometimes forget how fortunate we are compared to others, so show your appreciation by giving back. Whether it's going to your local soup kitchen once a month or committing to weekly shifts at a clothing drive, your time and energy will be appreciated. It'll make you put things in your life in perspective.
