Why Healthy Fats Are Important

October 25, 2016

To eat fat or not to eat fat, that is the question! It's not surprising if you're confused if fat is beneficial to your diet. America went through a huge low-fat phase in the 90s, but more and more doctors are encouraging their patients to add fat back in their diets.

Having fat is essential to your diet. Your body isn't able to make essential fatty acids on its own, so you need to take them in see the benefits. Fat also helps your body use the fat soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K) so you absorb as much as you can from them. You also need fat for brain development in children, having good eyesight, and maintaining healthy skin. Here's a list of food that you might already be eating and didn't know how healthy they were!

Coconuts are a tasty way to get your daily fat in. They're not stored as fat but used as an energy source, which is great when you do that tough workout later. There's so many easy ways to eat this - you can make baked coconut chips as a snack, use coconut oil when cooking, or use coconut milk in recipes like curries. Plus it'll make you feel like you're in the tropics instead of just your kitchen!

Fish Oil

You've probably heard that fish is good for you, but do you know why? They contain essential omega-3s, which your body can't produce on its own. Omega-3s can help lower your cholesterol, decrease joint pain and stiffness in those with arthritis, and decrease your chance of depression. You're also getting a huge chunk of protein with each serving of fish you consume.

Nuts are one of the easiest ways to get in your daily fat requirements. They're fairly inexpensive and can quickly be put in a small container for a snack on the go. Eat them alone or spice up a salad with them - they're delicious both ways! They contain unsaturated fats, which can lower bad cholesterol levels. They're full of fiber, which helps you eat less by feeling full sooner. L-arginine can also be found in nuts, which makes you less prone to blood clots. The substance makes your artery walls more flexible so blood can keep flowing in a healthy manner.

When you're eating guacamole at that next football party, pat yourself on the back for actually doing yourself some good! Avocados are loaded with nutrients and vitamins, including vitamin C, K, E, and potassium. They also contain antioxidants which help maintain good eyesight and health. If that's not enough, they contain fiber to keep you full for a long time after your meal.

Flaxseed may be small, but packs a powerful punch. They're a great alternative for vegans to get in their omega 3s if they don't want to eat fish, and can be thrown in anything. Flaxseed is also gluten-free, providing a great alternative to grains for those who are allergic. Put them in your smoothie, over your breakfast bowl, or in your yogurt. Taking a daily serving helps with maintaining healthy hair and skin in addition to a regular beauty routine.
